Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

História Econômica & História de Empresas follows the guidelines and recommendations regarding the use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and AI-assisted technologies established by Elsevier. The use of AI technologies must comply with ethical principles in accordance with COPE guidelines concerning privacy, copyright, and other related issues. The journal monitors the ongoing debate on the use of AI in scientific research and will revise its policy whenever necessary.

For authors
Authors are allowed to use generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies, provided such use is consistent with the journal’s AI policy. AI technologies cannot be listed as authors. The use of these tools must be carried out under strict human oversight, with authors responsible for verifying the accuracy of the generated content, including factual errors, and assuming full responsibility for authorship and the published material. The use of generative AI to create or modify images, graphs, or figures is not permitted; only minor adjustments such as brightness, contrast, and color are allowed. Upon submission, authors must disclose the use and purpose of generative AI tools and AI-assisted technologies. This information will be published at the end of the article.

For reviewers
Invited reviewers must treat the manuscript as a confidential document. Uploading parts or the entirety of the manuscript to generative AI tools or AI-assisted technologies is not permitted, due to the risk of copyright violations. Peer review is an exclusively human responsibility. The use of AI tools as review assistants is prohibited, as it undermines the critical thinking required for peer review. AI technologies may generate incomplete, inaccurate, or biased evaluations and conclusions. Reviewers are solely responsible for the assessment, which is a non-delegable task.

For editors
Editors must treat manuscripts as confidential documents. Uploading parts or the entirety of a manuscript to generative AI tools or AI-assisted technologies is not permitted, due to the risk of copyright violations. This confidentiality extends to editorial decisions and all communication with authors. Therefore, editors may not submit editorial letters or communications to AI tools, even for the purpose of correcting grammatical or stylistic issues. Editors may not use AI technologies as assistants in editorial work, as this may lead to incomplete, inaccurate, or biased evaluations and conclusions.

Any cases not covered by this policy will be evaluated by the Editorial Team.
